MotoGP on live television with 46 broadcasters in 2004
MotoGP is enjoyingone of the most exciting seasons in the sport's 55-year history, with the world’s focus on the reigning champion Valentino Rossi’s switch from Honda to Yamaha, and at least half a dozen riders and manufacturers fighting for the ultimate prize.
As a consequence, the interest from TV audiences worldwidecontinues to grow and in 2004 the Live (or Delayed, depending on the different time zones) broadcasts of the MotoGP World Championship are being shown by no less than 46 TV networks. Several pan-continental channels are amongst these broadcasters, meaning the races can now be seen in every country in the world.
Counting all the possible formats (live shows, same-day-delayed, highlight packages, news items, etc), the global coverage for each round of the MotoGP World Championship is well over 300 million TV viewers, through more than 200 networks.
The increase in both number and quality of the broadcasts is clear evidence of the progress being made by MotoGP. Some key territories have improved their coverage thanks to new agreements with Dorna Sports, rights holder to the series.
RTL, in Germany, and BBC, in Great Britain, were the most significant additions in 2003, and for the new season they have both boosted their dedication to the series, with more shows and more human and technical resources. The ultimate goal is to achieve large audiences, similar to those in Spain through TVE and in Italy with Mediaset.
Other countries continue to receive extensive coverage of the whole MotoGP season throughout the main terrestrial free-to-air networks: Japan (NHK and NTV), Australia (Ten and Fox), Brazil (Globo), Belgium (RTL Club), Ireland (RTE), Finland (Nelonen), Netherlands (NOS), Czech Republic (Prima TV), Switzerland (TSI, TSR and DRS), Austria (ATV+), Russia (Center TV), China (Guangdong TV, Shanghai TV, Beijing TV)…
The latest additions to the MotoGP distribution list have been Magic TV (Greece), TV New Zealand (New Zealand), Ten Sports (India and Pakistan), Channel 11 (Thailand), RTS (Serbia) and Al Jazeera Sport (Middle East).
